Task: Upgrade the binnacle warning lights

I didn’t know whether or not the warning lights worked, but decided anyway to replace them with more reliable and brighter LEDs.  There are several warning lights: Neutral indicator (green), Indicators (x2: green), Headlight on (green) Headlight high beam (blue), Ignition Warning (red), Oil Pressure (red).  Brake (red).

I bought a set of 12V LED tails from the Internet.  Each is an LED with a resistor in series.  The lamps were connected via the wiring loom.  I took the bulb holders and adapted them by removing the electrical connectors and then fitted the LED wires through the connector.  Now, they work as follows:

  • Indicators: these indicate correctly.
  • Neutral: this uses the switch on the gearbox and indicates correctly.
  • Headlight: indicates correctly.
  • High Beam: indicates correctly.
  • Oil pressure warning: this uses the oil pressure switch on the engine and indicates correctly.
  • Ignition warning: This used to be powered from the circuit that primed the alternator, and is effectively not possible with the regulator I’ve chosen.  However, itis possible to see whether the battery is charging via the M-Unit functionality and the app on my phone.   The indication is non-functional.
  • Brake Warning: The brake reservoir cap for the linked brake doesn’t have a level switch.  Neither does the one on the handlebars.  I don’t think that this light has ever worked.  The indication is still non-functional.
