Suspension isn’t too complex a topic, at least to start with. In the Guzzi, the front forks have springs and an internal damper. You can buy improved, variable-rate springs, and you can buy an improved damper. At the rear, you can buy new, fairly smart shock absorbers. So, I’ve opted for that. People braver than I may well opt for a more comprehensive treatment – upside-down forks sourced from a different motorcycle, for example. But I really didn’t want to make my life even more complicated, and I certainly didn’t want to be manufacturing a new arrangement to hold something different. I am aware, though, that this is the biggest compromise on the bike. The Mille GT was made with relatively puny front forks for example – they’re only 32mm in diameter. Of course, you don’t really do the suspension until the wheels are on the bike.
