There were 4 frame items that needed refinishing. The frame itself, the two subframe rails and the swinging arm were all painted red. With everything removed from the frame, the work needed was a fairly simple de-tagging job as well as removal of the steering head bearings and the steering lock mechanism. The two triangular apertures created by the tubes linking the swinging arm mounts to the top rails of the frame had mounting points for the regulator components and for the twin ignition coils fitted. I had decided to replace the regulator and the ignition, so these could be removed. There were also mounting points for the side-panels; as I wasn’t refitting these, they could be removed as well. This comprised the ‘de-tagging’.
The swinging arm houses the machine’s drive shaft (the bike isn’t chain-driven). So, if I was going to have it re-finished, the drive shaft needed removal. I sought help with this and was very lucky to find someone with the equipment to remove a bearing that sits deep within the swinging arm. With this removed, I took the frame, rails and swinging arm to my local powder-coating specialist who, I have to say, did a superb job with them.
