The “Toppsspot” clock

The “Toppsspot” clock

This clock dial is marked ‘Sandy’ and there’s a hairdresser in Sandy, Bedfordshire called ‘Tops Spot’, so I suspect this clock originally came from there. It’s a typical 19th century wall clock with a ‘fusee’ driven pendulum movement. This type of movement was used in high-quality clocks, designed for superior accuracy by using a chain-driven, cone-shaped pulley (the fusee) to equalize the uneven pull of the mainspring as it wound down. We call this the ‘Tosspot’ clock, but it keeps excellent time.
