When I was in the RN, there was a lot of dialogue about leadership; which was about vision and so on. Management was considered to be the set of things that you had to do to get things done. Then, when I joined the civilian workforce there was talk about management, which seemed to include all the elements of leadership. I don’t think the terminology is very helpful – there’s only one of you, so do what you do as well as you can do it. I think the best leaders are charismatic, but we can’t all be charismatic, can we? However, we can learn to make the best of ourselves. If you were to workshop the ideals of leadership and management, then you’d probably come up with a useful set of characteristics that we’d like to see in our managers. I think teamwork is important, as is the ability of the management team (for it is often a team) to make wise decisions.
