I’m coming out…

I’m coming out…

… so you better get this party started. That’s a quote from a P!nk song. (please excuse the American expression in there. I’d have said you’d). Seriously though, I’m not.

How is if that ‘we all’ became so obsessed with gender and sexuality? I’m sorry but I don’t get it. I do understand that some people are gay (or whatever) and that some feel born into the wrong sex. I also understand the need to be kind and non-discriminatory. However, I really, really, struggle to understand why we’re encouraging people to question their gender. And spending precious public funds to facilitate this seems like a nonsense to me. Do we have our priorities straight?

You can lose yourself in the research – just do a Google search for “72 genders” and you’ll see what I mean. Lgbthero.org.uk even has an on-line guide that lists 18 definitions, including:

Binary gender

This is the traditional belief that there are only two real genders: “man” and “woman.” This is an outdated belief that doesn’t account for the vast range of ways that people experience gender as somewhere between man and woman, or on a completely different scale altogether.

Good grief. If there’s a spectrum, why even try to make definitions? Why is the media so obsessed with these topics? I suspect that it’s because there is such a broad spectrum of views, and so many obvious nonsensical examples. I’ve even given the topic an airing here. Aargh.

I do wonder what the point of ‘coming out’ is. If it’s a demand to be treated as what you purport to be, then I think I’m coming out as immensely good-looking. I mean – I really deserve to be a beautiful person. Am I being overly cynical here? Well, yes, of course. But we see cynical behaviour all the time, don’t we? Take me seriously. Well, yes, so long as you’re being sincere.
