I don’t know who made this clock; I bought it from a local charity shop, but it’s German and dates from the early part of he last century. You can see that it has 3 winding arbours. One’s for time-keeping (the central one), one’s for striking (striking the hours) and the third is for chiming (marking the quarter-hours.
The clock was built with Westminster chimes, but when I re-built it, I didn’t take adequate care and so the quarter-hours are marked with strange tunes. The ‘gongs’ are steel rods but, as I’ve said, I only wind the time spring and so the clock runs silently (well, apart from the ticking…). The pendulum weight is mounted on a wooden rod and is to my mind surprisingly light. The case is oak.
