No nation exists on its own. It has to deal with its neighbours and it has to take its place on the world stage. Other countries might want things that it has, and it needs to manage its international relations. All of this is nuanced, and yet again, it needs people who are expert in managing relations. They in turn need to be authorised to make decisions on the nation’s behalf, and their initiatives need to be controlled by our government.
We need to control our borders. Plainly, it isn’t in the interests of the Nation to have uncontrolled borders, but our nationals will need to travel – for many reasons, including tourism, trade and so on. We’d like ‘our’ people to be able to travel freely, and to go about their business without undue issues. But we need to respect the needs of other countries, so that international travel is eased, so far as is practicable. All of this requires yet more administration.
Where excesses exist, we need to sell things to other countries, and we need to buy things where we don’t make (or have) enough. We need to control this trade, so that the balance of payments doesn’t become skewed, and there are also things that we would rather not import, like recreational drugs. So, we need to tax some imports, and to pay taxes due to other countries (who will have similar needs).
